In the United Kingdom, Farmers Can Legally Feed Their Animals Plastic
In the U.K. up to 0.15% of plastic is allowed to go into feed for animals destined for human consumption.
As the Guardian reports: “More than 650,000 tonnes of unused food, from loaves of bread to Mars bars, are saved from landfill each year in the UK by being turned into animal feed.” This food is often still packaged when it goes through the recycling process as it is turned into animal feed. And because the machinery used to strip the unwanted food from its plastic wrapping isn’t able to separate 100% of the plastic, the Food Standards Agency permits feed to contain a part of the material. As we’ve seen before, when animals consume plastic that means it ends up in meat as well…which means people are eating it too.
While we all need to take initiative and remove meat from our diets to eventually lower the demand for meat and make this industry obsolete, the very least we can do in the meantime is ensure that these living, breathing animals aren’t fed plastics!

Cinder the Bear Survived Wildfire Burns Only to Be Shot by a Hunter
Cinder was a 30 pound young black bear in Washington state. In 2014, she miraculously survived severe wildfire burns and won the heart of us humans. Tragically, she was shot and killed almost immediately upon being released back into the wild. It’s illegal to kill a black bear in Washington state unless you have a license and it’s open season. Whoever killed her probably did not have that because they just left her body there. If a bear gets hurt or killed in self defense, the killer is supposed to notify the authorities. But Cinder’s body was just left to rot instead. Sign the petition to demand justice for Cinder!

The U.S. Wants to Slaughter Up to 1000 Sea Lions a Year
In June, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2083, giving certain state governments and Native American tribes the right to kill up to 100 sea lions at a time. Last week, the U.S. Senate passed a similar bill which brings the sea lion slaughter even closer to reality.
Why, despite the celebrated protections of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), would our government allow state and tribal governments to kill up to 1000 sea lions a year?
Well according to some “experts,” sea lions in the Columbia River basin are the principal threat to the wild salmon population in the area. Wild salmon have recently been added to the Endangered Species List. Congress, then, wants to cull the Columbia River sea lions which prey on the salmon, believing that will improve salmon stock.
In fact, the problem isn’t the seal lion population, it’s — you guessed it — us!

What Will Happen to Thousands of Penguins When Their Island Home Goes Up For Sale?
Pebble Island, one of the larger offshore islands of the Falklands has been owned by the same family for 150 years. However, the Harris family, which currently lives in Wales, says the island is just too much for them to maintain from afar and so they are looking to sell.
Pebble Island is home to sea lions, sheep, cattle and, most importantly, thousands of penguins from several species including Macaroni, Gentoo and Magellanic. In all, a total of 42 species of birds breed natively on the island making it an International Bird and Biodiversity Area. The designation suggests that it is a place that should be protected at all costs.
If the new owner decides to develop the island these birds could be in danger of losing their land, and that is something that should never happen. One way of protecting the island is if the government bought the island and turned it to a wildlife sanctuary.
