MASK or NO MASK
First of all, it is clear that the main way this virus is spreading is by direct, person to person contact, especially if the infected person is coughing or sneezing since this projects the virus outwards forcefully. There is some evidence that viral particles can actually linger in the air for a while, even without coughing, presumably from breathing or talking. How much and for how long is not clear. We know, for example, that the virus causing measles can be airborne for 2 hours but Covid-19 is still too much of an unknown.
You can also catch the virus by touching a surface previously contaminated by an infected patient. It can linger for a few days on metal surfaces like door handles. There are a few lists on line as to how long it can live but a safe bet is to leave things alone for 3 days or alcohol swab packages, bags… right away.
What is also known is that a regular surgical mask will NOT filter out this virus. You need an N90 mask for that. A regular mask will filter out some of the droplets if someone sneezes or if you sneeze but this is only a small amount of protection.
A small amount of protection is better than no protection but the BEST protection, is to STAY HOME!!!
In addition, buying up masks is taking masks away from healthcare providers who are exposed to much higher levels of viral lad which is partly why healthcare workers who get infected seem to be having more severe cases of the disease.
If you have a mask and absolutely MUST go out, wear it. Re-use it. But don’t go crazy ordering cases of them. other need them more.
