Coronavirus treatment (zithromax and chloroquine)
Good morning,
I have had a number of questions about some treatments and possible preventive medicines for this infection.
Lets be clear. There is only 1 definite magic bullet.
DON’T GET SICK.
And the only way to achieve that is not to come into contact with someone, or something which has the virus.
Remember that you may not have symptoms for up to 2 weeks (most within 5-7 days) of being infected and the virus can live for up to 9 days (mostly 3-5) on solid surfaces, especially metal (like door handles).
It’s been very dismaying hearing about people, both young and old, still going out unnecessarily and getting together socially. DON’T DO IT. Stay home. If you must go out, it had better be for a really legitimate reason. “I miss my ice cream” is not one of them! Buying food for your parents is.
Getting back to treatment, there is some evidence that the combination of the commonly over prescribed antibiotic azithromycin (Zithromax) in combination with the malaria drug chloroquine is effective in treating MORE SEVERE infections, in SOME people. It is certainly not definitive.
Unfortunately, people are getting these drugs illegally and unethically and there is now a developing shortage to treat those who really need it!!!
Just to be clear, the vast majority of people will have no symptoms or very mild symptoms and need NO TREATMENT other than isolation and supportive care like tylenol. For more severe cases, ones where there may be some more significant breathing issues, or if you have an underlying chronic condition, these drugs may be given, by a doctor, after being checked out!!!
Stay safe. Stay well.
