FYI

As stressful as it is going out the door every morning to the hospital and the office and worrying about infecting my family, what wakes me up at night and stresses me out the most is that we will learn nothing from this experience.

Pandemics have occured many times before and they will occur again.

Swine flu, H1N1, H5N1, SARS-1, MERS, The Spanish flu, Mad Cow disease, the annual regular old Flu and now SARS-2 (Covid-19). These are all zoonotic diseases. Diseases from animals, mostly because of viruses, which mutated enought that humans now could become infected with them. Without any innate immunity, they spread like wild fire in human populations. All these conditions came from infected animals raised in overcrowded, filthy conditions. Conditions created by supply and demand. And it’s not just the wet markets in Asia. As only one example, the vast majority of cows in the US are infected with BLV, Bovine Leukemia Virus. This virus has been linked to breast cancer in humans. Yes of course there are other risk factors, but most of them are diet and lifestyle related. If you want more examples, check out the section about zoonotic diseases on my website (doctorchuma.com).

It is clear to me what needs to be done but people are not willing to do it.

Stop, or at least significantly cut back on eating meat and animal products and not only will these pandemics end but the 90% of all human diseases which are preventable chronic conditions like cancer, heart disease and diabetes will diminish dramatically as well.

I’m not saying that no one will ever get sick or get a disease, but the vast majority of conditions can be prevented, reversed or much more easily managed. If nothiong else, a healthier population will weaather pandemics like this better.

For now, shelter in place so you don’t get sick. Wash your hands. Don’t touch your face but most importanlty, enjoy the time with your families and stay connected with those from whom you are separated.

Drug tretment for corona

Coronavirus treatment (zithromax and chloroquine)

Good morning,
I have had a number of questions about some treatments and possible preventive medicines for this infection.

Lets be clear. There is only 1 definite magic bullet.

DON’T GET SICK.

And the only way to achieve that is not to come into contact with someone, or something which has the virus.

Remember that you may not have symptoms for up to 2 weeks (most within 5-7 days) of being infected and the virus can live for up to 9 days (mostly 3-5) on solid surfaces, especially metal (like door handles).

It’s been very dismaying hearing about people, both young and old, still going out unnecessarily and getting together socially. DON’T DO IT. Stay home. If you must go out, it had better be for a really legitimate reason. “I miss my ice cream” is not one of them! Buying food for your parents is.

Getting back to treatment, there is some evidence that the combination of the commonly over prescribed antibiotic azithromycin (Zithromax) in combination with the malaria drug chloroquine is effective in treating MORE SEVERE infections, in SOME people. It is certainly not definitive.

Unfortunately, people are getting these drugs illegally and unethically and there is now a developing shortage to treat those who really need it!!!

Just to be clear, the vast majority of people will have no symptoms or very mild symptoms and need NO TREATMENT other than isolation and supportive care like tylenol. For more severe cases, ones where there may be some more significant breathing issues, or if you have an underlying chronic condition, these drugs may be given, by a doctor, after being checked out!!!

Stay safe. Stay well.
