DOCTORS ARE MAKING UP THE COVID NUMBERS! How insulting.
Our administration has long attributed our rising Covid cases to “too much testing” when we in fact have one of the poorest track records of per-capita testing of any developed country. In addition, more testing does not cause more hospital admissions, which cannot be denied. In fact, about 2-3 weeks after many recent political rallies by you-know-who, where no distancing and limited mask wearing was observed, hospital admissions in those communities for Covid-19 tripled.
To add to the ridiculous rhetoric, our present administration has made public comments accusing doctors of inflating the covid numbers and making things up to make more money. As a physician who sees patients everyday both in the office and the hospital, this is beyond insulting. I can’t even imagine what ER and hospital healthcare workers must feel when they hear such accusations. For someone whose life may have been saved by having strings pulled by doctors, getting treatments and a level of care unavailable to anyone else, for the President to then insult the healthcare system is beyond reproachable.
There is no question that our healthcare system is broken. It’s not “health care”, it’s “sick care”. Our system is the most costly by an order of magnitude than any other system in the world and yet we have the fattest and the sickest people. Our life expectancy is one of the worst of all developed countries (42nd). Our infant mortality rate is one of the highest (we rank 33rd). Our system is definitely driven by profit but those who profit the most are drug companies, who like nothing more than to see chronic disease numbers rising so they can sell more drugs, healthcare systems, insurance companies and the malpractice legal system which is on constant patrol for any opportunity to litigate. Doctors order tests not always because they are necessary, but to cover the bases so no one can accuse them of “delay in diagnosis”, the most common malpractice claim. Do we order more tests than is necessary, yes we do. Are there corrupt, opportunistic doctors? Of course. But there are corrupt and opportunistic people in every facet of life. No one is standing in a full body suit in an ER, ICU or Operating room taking care ov covid patients to make an extra buck. It’s a terrifying experience.
In addition, there isn’t a doctor in the country whose income has not been affected, some to extreme degrees, by this epidemic. Our practice still has an office which we have not re-opened and the number of patients we are seeing now is much lower, mostly because of new distancing measures we have implemented and fewer visit slots we offer, all to ensure patient and staff safety. Fewer office visits are also a result of patient fears, who often cancel at the last minute or just don’t show up. Video visits are not possible for some types of specialties or visit types.
As long as there has been health insurance, there has been a constant battle between doctors as well as healthcare facilities and the insurance companies who are supposed to pay for the services provided. Rules set by insurance companies are constantly changing and we are required to do more and more administrative work to “justify” a level of care, a test ordered or a treatment recommended. It’s exhausting. They jump on every opportunity to deny payment and even reserve the right to contest services and ask for money back even years after a doctor or hospital was paid. Covid has complicated this interaction considerably.
I’m not an expert on the ins and outs of reimbursement, including those involving Covid-19, but my understanding is that a Covid diagnosis does, or at least did, provide some additional financial reimbursement. But the losses hospitals and doctors continue to experience far outweigh any benefit.
As far as bloated numbers are concerned, even if you assume a small number of Covid diagnoses are “made up” or “exaggerated”, fake Covid numbers can’t possibly account for the approximately additional 500,000 deaths in the US compared with a year ago in the same timeframe. Although less than half of those are thought to be either from heart attacks, heart failure or strokes, many of those can still be attributed to Covid since the fear of catching it, resulted in delayed treatment and premature death.
I know I’m venting here but the level of frustration keeps rising.
Regardless of who wins the election, wheels are in motion for a very taxing late fall and winter season.
