Post-Vaccine update

Andrew Chuma No Comments

Good morning everyone.

Day 3 post Covid vaccine and I feel great. The mild shoulder pain from the shot has resolved. I worked out this morning and had no problems. I have my follow up shot planned for just over 2 weeks from now. Neither of my partners who had their shots 3 days before me have any issues either.

Please get vaccinated as soon as you are able to get it. It’s the only way, short of worldwide lockdown for 2-3 weeks (we’re too lazy to do this), to get rid of this virus.

Have a great holiday. Be grateful for what you have.  Enjoy your families and keep doing all the things you know you need to do to keep yourself, your friends, loved ones and all of those around us safe. Our future depends on it.

CONNECT WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I’m putting this first today because of how fundamentally important human connection is, especially now.

NEW NEW Coronavirus?

Andrew Chuma No Comments

As new as the SARS-Cov-2 virus is, like all other viruses, and all forms of life for that matter, it is constantly changing and evolving primarily through changes in its genetic code, aka, mutations. These mutations occur every time a cell or organism divides or replicates.

Some viruses mutate very quickly. For example the reason that we need a new flu vaccine every year is because of how quickly the influenza virus mutates. It changes just enough that the previous year’s vaccine is no longer effective. The virus which causes Covid-19 is no different however it mutates much more slowly. In fact, it’s been mutating all along, and these mutations have been monitored.

There is a new strain of this virus, named B.1.1.7 or VUI-2020/01, which has surfaced in Britain which has many people concerned because of it’s apparent increased transmission rate.

There are 3 important things about this new virus we need to figure out quickly. Does it spread more, does it result in a worse case of Covid and will the vaccine or previous illness provide protection against it?

As far as the transmission rate, it is clear that it is more infectious but the exact amount is not clear. Given the fact that the original virus is significantly more infectious than the flu to begin with, how much more infectious is not necessarily relevant unless you are not following advised protection recommendations. If you behave irresponsibly, I would be more concerned. If you are careful and follow CDC recommendations, still be concerned, but not as much.

The degree of disease does not appear to be any different. The disease does not appear to be any worse than what the original virus causes.

As far as cross protection, this is unclear, but the early thoughts are that there SHOULD be protection. When you get sick or get an immunization, you generate antibodies to many different parts of the microbe. Although some of these antibodies may be rendered ineffective, not all will. At least not initially. We know that with the original virus, the vaccine results in a more robust, broad immune response than what we see after actual infection. This is why you MUST get vaccinated, even if you had the illness in the past.

This is a NEW version of a NEW virus so there are many more questions than answers at this stage.

The good, early news is that it may not be as bad as people fear. But then again, we thought that things could not possibly get as bad with Covid as they are today.

This new virus is another reason to protect yourself and those around you.

By the way, 18 hours after my Covid vaccine, other than my arm being a bit sore (I’m a skinny runt) and having sneezed once (most likely from getting some turmeric powder in my nose), I feel great!

Stay safe and be well.
